Why is it important to wear a retainer after braces are removed, and how does it help prevent teeth from shifting into the wrong position?

Wearing a retainer after braces are removed is critical to maintaining the results achieved during orthodontic treatment. Braces gradually move teeth into the correct position, but even after they are removed, teeth are not immediately stable. Without a retainer, teeth can easily shift back into their previous positions. This process of backward movement is called relapse, and it can undo months or years of effort put into correcting the alignment of teeth. Retainers after braces act as a holding device, giving these tissues time to remodel and harden around the newly aligned teeth. Without a retainer, teeth would naturally begin to shift back into their previous positions because the tissues have not fully adapted to the new position.

The main function of a retainer is to prevent relapse, which is when teeth move back into the position they were in before treatment. Teeth have a natural tendency to shift, especially after they have been moved from their original position.

A retainer helps maintain results by ensuring that teeth stay in the desired position for a long time.
